76 Gas Stations
76 gas stations can be found throughout the United States. Formerly Union 76 the brand is now owned by ConocoPhillips after enduring a very colorful history. The Union 76 brand was conceptualized by the Union Oil Company of California (Unocal) who later merged with Chevron Corporation in the year 2005.
Prior to this merger in 2005 Unocal sold the western division of the refining and marketing operations along with the rights to the Union 76 brand for use in refining and marketing to Tosco Corporation. Since then Phillips Petroleum acquired Tosco and then merged with Conoco to form ConocoPhillips.
Today the gasoline offered by 76, Conoco, and Phillips 66 are marketed under the brand name PROclean. Before this transition the brand name had been Propower until the termination of a commercial agreement with NASCAR. When this relationship ended the firm discontinued their motorsport fuel offerings. Since 2004 PROclean has been listed in the Top Tier of fuels.
76 gasoline was first introduced in 1932 and was indicative of the octane rating of the fuel in addition to the "Spirit of '76." Designed in 1962 by Ray Pedersen the bright orange balls with 76 written in blue on them captured the hearts and brought comfort to many Americans. This was so much so that when efforts were made to rebrand the logo in 2005 a Save The 76 Ball campaign was born and was so effective that the company backed down on its decision. Several of the classic orange balls have since been donated to museums and are now replaced with the new red and blue color scheme.
76 or Union 76 as it was called back then has also created a little bit of history. According to some accounts in 1967 the very first antenna balls were created by Union 76 Gas Station in an effort to advertise their brand. During this campaign millions of these promotional antenna balls were handed out and today a few of these are still around as collectible items. Since then more and more companies have followed suit and used this valuable idea to market their own brand.
76 gasoline has come a long way since its inception and can now be found at over 1,900 fuel sites across the United States.
