Speedway Gas Station

Speedway operates a chain of combo gas station and convenience stores in the Midwest and Southeastern part of the United States. Speedway is wholly owned and operated by the Marathon Petroleum Company. Today Speedway has more than 1,400 retail locations and is currently the largest chain in Ohio.

During the first half of the 20th century Speedway 79 had been a gasoline retail chain with locations in Michigan. In 1959 Marathon (then the Ohio Oil Company) purchased the chain and changed the names to the Marathon brand. Marathon later decided to reinstate the Speedway name at the more popular stations with convenience stores but they left out the 79 part of the name. This worked out great for Marathon and so the idea was expanded to other main territories in the Midwest and Southeastern parts of the United States.

When Marathon and Ashland Petroleum merged in 1997 to form Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC Ashland Super America and Marathon's Speedway convenience stores were merged to form Speedway SuperAmerica LLC.

Today, Speedway LLC has its headquarters in Enon, Ohio and although the chain remains active in the Midwest they no longer operate in the Southeast since 2003 when Speedway's operations were sold off to Sunoco by Marathon. In 2011 they were no longer operational in Minnesota when the SuperAmerica Brand was sold to Northern Tier Energy. The Speedway brand is now used in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Some of Speedway's main competitors are BP, Circle K, Kwik Trip, Holiday Stationstores, General Stores and Sheetz. All of Speedway's locations are owned and operated by Speedway, LLC. Marathon's locations are all franchises.

When visiting a Speedway location you have the option of fresh coffee and other hot drinks as well as fountain drinks, cold subs and sandwiches if you need them. They also serve breakfast and lunch at select locations during specific hours of the day.

Speedy launched its rewards card program in 2004 where customers are given the card at no cost to accumulate points on all their Speedway and SuperAmerica purchases. The points could then later be redeemed for coupons, gift cards and fuel discounts.

The Speedy Rewards program is also used to make targeted offers to customers in the form of coupons dispensed during checkout which is based on the customer location and spending habits.
