Texaco Gas Station

Texaco or the Texas Company is an American retail brand in the petroleum sector. Its main offering is the fuel Texaco with Techron and the Havoline motor oil brand.

Since 1901 Texaco has been an independently owned company until its merger with Chevron Corporation in 2001. The Texas Fuel Company as it was called back then was founded by Joseph S. Cullinan, Thomas J, Donoghue, Walter Benona Sharp and Arnold Schlaet in Beaumont, Texas after the discovery of oil in Spindletop. Texaco had been the only company selling gasoline under the same name brand in all 50 states and Canada.

Texaco gasoline includes the Techron additive which was developed by Chevron in the year 2005. The Texaco name expands across the US, Latin America, West Africa and Europe with over 1,100 Texaco service stations in the UK alone.

Ten years after the company was established in 1901 Texaco managed to purchase ownership of the Red Star Oil Company. Two years later in 1913 the company acquired control of the Central Petroleum Company. Texaco, in 1928 became the first US oil company to sell its gasoline across all 50 states under one single name brand.

1931 saw the purchase of the Indian Oil Company which helped to expand the company's marketing base into the Midwest. This also gives them rights to the manufacturing processes of Havoline "Wax Free" motor oil.

In 1937 a modern service station design was commissioned and the result was a functional white building with green trimmings, restrooms and multiple service bays. The registered restroom program introduced in 1939 ensured that restrooms at all the company's service stations were kept to a standard level of cleanliness for the public. This program was picked up by other oil companies.

In 1954 Texaco included a detergent additive called Petrox to its Sky Chief gasoline to satisfy the anti-knock needs of new automobiles. This brought the construction of a new plant in Port Arthur, Texas to manufacture Petrox.

Texas Company changes its name to Texaco, Inc in 1959 to better promote the brand which was at this time the largest selling brand of gasoline. Texaco introduced lead-free gasoline in 1970 which would become available nationwide in 1974 for 1975 model vehicles.

In 2001 Texaco purchased the rights to Nimh battery that was used in electric vehicles and shortly after merges with the Chevron Corporation.

In 2006 Chevron regained the exclusive rights to the Texaco brand name and began to open gas stations across the US. In July 2010 both Chevron and Texaco close down their retail operations in the Mid-Atlantic which meant the removal of their brands from 1,100 service stations in places like Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, West Virginia, Ohio and others.
